3P (Pole, Pedal, Paddle) as individual or team. A three leg race: nordic/rando ski, mountain bike and class II-ish kayak. Start at the Continental Divide on Monarch Pass with a backcountry ski leg, mountain bike by Mt. Shavano to the Arkansas River and whitewater kayak into downtown Salida. Perhaps the best combination of disciplines of any race. It certainly reflects the diversity of the Colorado lifestyle, all in one race.
The race is a benefit the Arkansas River Trust, a local non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of the Upper Arkansas River, enhancing recreational access to the Arkansas River and promoting youth participation in whitewater paddle sports.

5. Attend Aspen Highland’s closing day party on April 4th. One of the last great closing day parties left in the state. Show up in a costume and select a designated driver. Skim the pond, get some runs, hike the bowl and join the party. Highlands patrol skis down at the end of the day tossing bombs to huge cheers from the massive crowd at the base area. Their extraordinary efforts to open the bowl and keep it safe are second to none in the ski industry.
Aspen/Snowmass Events
This is a great website. It consolidates all the information that a lot of backcountry skiers routinely look up. Now it is all in one place.
AspenSnowInfo.com covers the Central Mountains of Colorado including the resorts of Aspen, Aspen Highlands, Sunlight, Crested Butte and Cooper. You get resort snow total reports, National Weather Service automated weather station reports, Colorado Avalanche Information Center summary, weather forecasts and a couple of webcams. Very comprehensive, pretty much everything you need to make informed decisions for the day’s plan and for trip planning.
WesternSnowInfo.com covers the West as a snapshot and there are other specific areas such as the SummitSnow.com for Summit County in Colorado and other sites for the Tetons, Wasatch, Oregon, Teton River area, the Jackson Hole/Targee area…. Tahoe and Montana coming soon.
